Apply for a Scholarship

The Steve Smith Scholarship Fund brought its first scholarship student to Michigan State University for the 2000/2001 academic year, and since then has benefited a worthy Pershing High School graduate every year with a 4 year $10,000 per year scholarship to MSU. The scholarship is a gift for the students so that they may attend MSU without the concern of financing their education, and is also intended to encourage them to achieve their educational and professional goals.

The Steve Smith/MSU/Pershing High School Scholarship is based on academic achievement, as well as community involvement and extra-curricular activities of Pershing High School seniors. If you are a student at Pershing High School, or know of one that may be interested in the scholarship, please review the requirements and application process outlined below. Applicant Requirements

  • Applicants must be full-time students of Detroit Pershing High School
  • Applicants must apply to MSU and be accepted by MSU to begin classes for the academic year following graduation from Detroit Pershing

    Application Process

    1. Obtain an application from the Guidance and Counseling Office at Pershing High School.
    2. Complete the application, and attach a list of the following:
      • Academic recognition or community service awards you have received;
      • Summer programs you have attended;
      • Extracurricular activities (clubs, volunteer experience, sports, etc.) you participated in at Pershing High School and in your community;
      • Service or community groups/activities in which you have participated
    3. Return the completed application and attached information to the Guidance and Counseling Office at Pershing High School. DO NOT email applications to the SSSFund. The Guidance and Counseling Office will then complete the necessary academic information and forward all applications to MSU.
  1. The recipient of the scholarship will be notified of the award by the MSU Office of Admissions and Scholarships. Those applicants that are declined will be notified as well.
