Steve Smith to be Inducted into The World Sports Humanitarian Hall of Fame

Boise, ID – Steve Smith will be inducted into The World Sports Humanitarian Hall of Fame in recognition of his efforts as a role model and philanthropist on November 30, 2006.

Minnesota Twin’s Harmon Killebrew and the Seattle Seahawk’s Steve Largent will round out the Class of 2006 at the 12th annual induction ceremony of the Humanitarian Hall of Fame, located on the campus of Boise State University. Smith, Killebrew, and Largent are being recognized not only for their outstanding athletic ability, but for their extensive humanitarian efforts and for being exceptional role models in their community.

Smith’s widespread generosity includes beneficiaries such as Michigan State University, where he donated over $3.1 million to help build the Clara Bell Smith Student Athlete Academic Center. The center, which was named after Smith’s late mother, provides student athletes at MSU academic support so they may excel not just in their sport, but in the classroom as well. This gift also endowed the Steve Smith Scholarship Fund, which every year provides one student from Smith’s high school – Detroit’s Pershing High School – with a four-year scholarship to MSU.

Since it’s beginning in 1994 the Humanitarian Hall of Fame has inducted over 30 outstanding philanthropists from the professional and amateur world of sports, including tennis great Arthur Ashe (1994), the MLB’s Jackie Robinson (2004), soccer great Pel’ (1998), and the NBA’s David Robinson (1998).
